The Science of UFOs!
2nd July 2024

It’s World UFO Day, so today we’ll be taking a quick look at the science that can explain the truth behind so-called UFO sightings!
The atmosphere is home to many phenomena that we do not see every day from the ground, but that are fascinating and beautiful in equal measure. One such spectacle is thermospheric plasmas – clouds of ionized gas and radiated dust in the upper atmosphere.
Plasmas are formed from and react to atmospheric turbulence; geomagnetic storms caused by solar coronal mass ejections, i.e. large discharges of plasma and magnetism from the Sun’s corona; solar flares; and electromagnetic radiation.
Plasmas vary in charge, density, temperature, and stability, but they all exhibit similar ‘behaviours’. Although they are inorganic and non-biological, plasmas can be observed moving in patterns that can be mistaken for having intent. Their charges attract them to each other and to thunderstorms over tens of kilometres away.
The shape and luminosity of thermospheric plasmas can very easily be mistaken for the glow of aircraft engines, and they have been linked to UFO sightings as early as the 1940s. American fighter pilots in the Second World War dubbed them ‘Foo Fighters’.
But even though these phenomena are not, in fact, visitors from another world, they may still exhibit signs of pre-life!
The electrostatic forces found in polarized thermospheric plasmas induce helical twisting of radiated dust grains in the ionized gas cloud, forming “plasma crystal” structures similar to that of DNA and RNA! These helices are often replicated across thermospheric plasmas when they come into contact with one another via a mechanism analogous to horizontal gene transfer in biological organisms.
However, these similarities are merely structural, and plasmas contain no DNA, RNA, nucleotides or amino acids.
We hope you’ve enjoyed this brief probing of UFOs and thermospheric plasmas!
