Alto Marketing

Reflections

By Mia Turner, Scientific Communications and PR Intern.

It’s the end of my seventh and final week at Alto and, I have to say, it’s been an amazing experience full of new opportunities and learning.

Entering into the final year of my undergrad next week, I feel far better prepared for the variety of tasks and projects that lay ahead of me – albeit with a slightly less scientifically focused perspective!

I’ve spent the past seven weeks working across a variety of projects. I’ve been lucky enough to gain exposure to the many different elements and inner-workings of a PR and Communications agency, and cannot count how many lessons I’ve learned.

Coming from a highly scientific background with essentially zero experience in marketing, being given so many opportunities to fully immerse myself in a new field – whether that be drafting press releases, LinkedIn posts or my much-loved blogs – has been such a gift.

The consistent exposure to new and changing projects has been nothing short of amazing and I know that the knowledge I’ve gained will be put into good practice once I graduate.

Below, I’ve jotted down a few of the many things I’ve learned in the past month and a half – some of which I truly had no idea about at all!

1. The importance of storytelling, even when it’s a wholly factual and informative piece

Without a story, you have no interest. It’s so important when writing to bring a story into what you’re saying to help get your idea across but also, to make it more memorable!

2. If a number is less than 10, you need to write the word and not the digit

This one definitely took me by surprise but it’s definitely something I’ll be keeping in mind for my dissertation!

3. That a company is an ‘it’ and not a ‘they’

I suppose when you really think about it, this one does make sense. But, I think that human nature leads us to speak of the people at companies and not the company itself, making this a hard habit to break!

Despite being a science nerd, I’ve discovered that there is in fact a world outside of labs and reports – a lesson that is without a doubt the most invaluable of all.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the experience I’ve had over the past month and a half, and cannot wait to see how it shapes my future path – I hope you’ve enjoyed my blogs as much as I’ve enjoyed writing them.
