ALTO’S SOCIAL MEDIA
At Alto we’ve been honing our social media skills so we are at the forefront of social media marketing in science and healthcare. And we practice what we preach. To see what we’ve got going on, you can check out our regularly updated Facebook, LinkedIn, blog and Twitter. You can also read more below about how we use our different channels.
To find out how Alto Marketing can help you integrate social media with your other communications channels, contact us now.
We use our @AltoMarketing Twitter feed to post client news releases, Alto blog entries and other news. These are then seen by our followers, some of whom then re-tweet the news onto their followers, thereby increasing the number of people being exposed to the news.
We have also used Twitter to generate interest around exhibitions and as a result have organised on-site journalist and editor meetings. In the past we have also used Twitter interaction to secure journalist briefings for press tours, resulting in further press coverage.
The Alto Blog
Our blog is another way in which we promote client news. We also use it to comment on current industry trends such as QR codes or to inform our readers about the latest news surrounding the key publications we work with. We had one recent blog entry about Laboratory News’ 40th birthday which followed a guest post from the editor of LCGC magazine, Janet Kelsey. This helps further build our relationships with our key media, placing Alto and the clients we work with at the forefronts of their minds.
Occasionally we’ll use the blog to comment on any interesting news articles affecting the life science and healthcare industries, such as the recent news about scientists believing they will one day be able to change the DNA of wild mosquitos in order to combat malaria.
We use Facebook in a similar way to our Twitter feed by posting our client news releases and Alto blog entries, with all posts linking back to the Alto Marketing website. In addition, we are “friends” or “like” client pages to further promote them to our audience.
We also use our Facebook page to keep our friends informed of the latest happenings at Alto Marketing such as Altoid birthdays and anniversaries.
We use our LinkedIn account in a similar way to our Facebook by posting news and blog posts for all our connections to see. You can find out a bit more about all of the Altoids and how they came to be at Alto.

IN SCIENCE
Pee powered fuel cells
Recent research at the Bristol Robotic Laboratory has led to the development of microbial fuel cells (MFCs), which use bacteria to break down organic molecules and generate electricity. As a waste product, expelling urine is the body’s way of ridding undesirable and toxic compounds from the system. These include a number of organic molecules, such as uric acid and creatinine, which can be broken down by bacteria to provide an abundant source of locally generated power. Read more

Population explosion – people, people, everywhere!
It is interesting to note that on Monday 31st October, the world’s population reached seven billion. It’s a hard number to contemplate; seven billion looks like this: 7,000,000,000. Read more
ALTO TOP TIP
QR codes- that was so last year!
It is only recently that we were singing the praises of QR codes, but now there is ‘markerless image recognition’ technology that takes the experience to a whole new level.
Confectionery company Cadbury has recently claimed a ‘world first’ by teaming up with Blippar ™, a free smart phone app that uses markerless image recognition technology to convert real-world images into instant virtual experiences. Cadbury is using the technology to turn its chocolate wrappers into fun games to play-as-you-go. Read more
