March Update

Pittcon 2009
Alto attendees – David Robinson and Neil Ravenhill

Alto Marketing recently headed west for Pittcon 2009 at the McCormick conference centre in Chicago. As expected the foot-traffic was down on previous years with just over 19,000 attendees, of which many were exhibitors (and consultants!) The tell-tale ‘hum’ was significantly dampened, however we did not speak to many unhappy exhibitors. The leading companies were still present with large booths and there was certainly a buzz about some of the new products on display. In fact, many exhibitors that we spoke to said they were getting a good number of better quality leads. Our inference is that companies/institutes are sending fewer people to shows this year, but the people who are going are, in the main, decision-makers/influencers.

Alto was also instrumental in organising a Tweet-up (a meet-up organised over Twitter) at Pittcon. With the help of the Hyatt McCormick Place, we set a venue and had a fantastic breakfast meeting, discussing Twitter and social media within the context of the life science/pharma/biotech market. The general feeling was that, although scientists by their very nature are early adopters, the industry has been slow to respond to this excellent opportunity to engage with a much broader range of customers (past, present and future).
