Spring show special
The new year has kicked off with a whole host of life science and healthcare shows and exhibitions. In the runup to spring we have compiled a special newsletter covering those most recent shows and events we have and will be attending in the next couple of months. If you’re off to a show, conference or exhibition this year don’t forget to speak to Alto about how we can support you with pre- and post-show promotion and on-site activities.

LabAutomation 2011
January 29-February 2, 2011
Historically LabAutomation has provided a positive and energetic start to the New Year for delegates and exhibitors alike and this year was no exception. Attracting nearly 4,500 participants to the Palm Springs Convention Center, CA, USA, the organisers were celebrating 15 years of bringing science, technology and industry together.
Delivering a fully comprehensive conference schedule by the industry leading experts, with key tracks focusing on:
• Detection and Separation
• Micro- and Nanotechnologies
• High-Throughput Technologies
• Informatics
• Evolving Applications of Laboratory Automation, featuring Agriculture and Food
Other sessions highlighted focused on hot topics such as using “green” laboratory products, budgeting for equipment and facilities, and exploring the future of laboratory automation.
From the exhibitors perspective feedback was good – the show delivered. The floor was busy, the vibe energetic and the number of new product introductions (more than 40 in total) provided a clear demonstration that the lab automation industry is driving development and innovation forward through this more challenging economic climate. The exhibit floor housed more than 240 different companies, including 40 first-time LabAutomation exhibitors.
For Alto our schedule was a busy one. LabAutomation has always been a great show for press attendance, and as such Alto was working on behalf of some specific clients to create ‘media interest’ around new product introductions. Our role was to set up media appointments ahead of the show, liaise with media on the ground and set up on-to-one booth meetings with key editors to discuss in more detail their new technologies and developments. Key to our business is our strong media relations and we see our show attendance as one of the most important aspects of this to maximise valuable face to face time spent with the media. As such a plethora of meetings were set up with key editors and media reps to further discuss new features and opportunities – with editorial and advertising – for 2011.
All in all it was a very productive, enjoyable and rather nostalgic event as the final LabAutomation show and thus the last trip for many to the warm desert of Palm Springs, California. However, as one door closes another opens! Looking forward, the combined forces of ALA and SBS have meant that 2012 holds more excitement in the form of the newly created Society for Lab Automation and Screening (SLAS) event set for February 2012.
We look forward to the very first SLAS event taking place in San Diego which will be focused for those scientists working within drug discovery and development as well as clinical diagnostics, food and agricultural sciences, forensics and security sciences, petrochemicals and energy. The scientific program is set to cover:
• Drug Target Biology
• Assay Development and Screening
• High Throughput Technologies
• Micro/Nano Technology
• Bioanalytical Techniques
• Diagnostics
• Informatics
The associated exhibit hall will provide the perfect arena to showcase new technology innovations and applications across these industry areas. For more information on the 2012 event, please visit www.slas2012.org/
