Fresh! Issue 8 March 10
Eggcellent news!
With a little help from the Alto team, the Easter bunny has been delivering delicious chocolate eggs to some of our top Life Science and Healthcare editors and publishers this week. As part of our Media Champion activities, we like to regularly contact your core publications to find out what new opportunities are available and keep your company’s name in their minds. Unsurprisingly, busy editors respond very well to endorphine releasing goodies like chocolate!
Media – What’s New?
Merger News: SBS+ALA=SLAS
Two of the world’s leading scientific membership organizations, the Society for Biomolecular Sciences (SBS) and the Association for Laboratory Automation (ALA), propose joining forces to become one united global community focused on advancing scientific research and innovation. The merger would marry the two groups under the banner of the Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening (SLAS). For more information, visit the merger website where members of both organisations can vote on the proposal.
The people behind the science
The Journal of Biomolecular Screening is looking to run a series of articles/interviews which will focus on the people behind today’s science. They are interested in the scientist’s specialist research area but importantly what makes them ‘tick’ and what hobbies or interests they have outside of the lab. The interviewee has to be a member of the Society of Biomolecular Sciences. If you have a candidate to represent your company and who you think would be suitable for interview, please get in touch with your Alto account manager.

Alto out and about
Pittcon 2010, Orlando
At the end of February, Alto Director David Robinson attended Pittcon. This year’s event was held in Orlando, Florida and appeared to be of a similar size (if perhaps a little smaller) to last year in Chicago. Speaking with exhibitors, the first day was not good, but attendance seemed to pick up on the second day before dropping off again. The general conclusion was that Pittcon continues to be just about worth exhibiting at. The show is still very well attended by media – making another good reason to attend, as long as media meetings are arranged in advance. Editors confirmed that there were continuous press events for the first day and a half…which makes it hard for a product launch to ‘stand out’ unless really significant. So if you are attending Pittcon in Atlanta in 2011, the key to a good press event is early organisation so you can choose from the best, early slots. Remember to speak with your Alto account manager who can help organise either press events or booth meetings to make the most of your exhibition investment.
Analytica 2010, Munich
Last week was ‘Analytica week’, one of the largest exhibitions in the science calendar with over 1000 exhibitors and 30,000 visitors. Dr Neil Ravenhill, Scientific Communications Manager reports on the event: In glorious spring sunshine, the Messe München was buzzing with an excitement absent from last October’s Biotechnica exhibition. Across all 5 halls, there were plenty of ‘New’ signs highlighting a plethora of product launches, and the editors (as numerous as ever) were busy racing to the press events and product launches. One editor even said that they had attended a secret product unveiling – an embargoed launch! All-in-all, Analytica 2010 was a good exhibition, with signs of a strong market for the year ahead.
From time to time we hear of industry people looking for a change in employment. If you have a marketing/sales/business development vacancy, we may be able to put you in contact with a suitable candidate. Contact David or Chris with details.
Best regards
The Alto Team
