Alto out and about
SBS 2010, Phoenix, Arizona
Senior Life Science Account Manager, Clare Russell, reports on SBS 2010:
This year the Society for Biomolecular Sciences (SBS) conference was held in Phoenix, Arizona, and was an adventure for many in more ways than one. Whilst numbers appeared to be down on previous years, vendor feedback from the first day was positive and a real buzz was reported at the show. Media attendance was undoubtedly reduced this year, but with some significant product launches from a number of our clients, we made sure we utilised people’s time and expertise wisely. Poster sessions and conference streams ran well, spanning a selection of hot topics such as Epigenetics, Critical Reagents and Lead Discovery in Immunoinflammation, Oncology and Neuroscience. Delegate traffic undoubtedly slowed over days 2 and 3 which may have been due to the earlier training and tutorial sessions which began on the 11th April – the exhibition did not open until the 13th. Nonetheless, exhibitor spirit remained high, even in the face of the unpredictable travel delays that followed the show as a consequence of the Icelandic Volcano eruption. Many Europeans were delayed for approximately a week and were spread throughout the US, stranded by internal flights and awaiting transatlantic connections. For Chris and I, Phoenix was not such a bad place to be stranded!
We wait with anticipation to see the effect of the proposed SBS & ALA merger in 2012. Whilst the shows look to remain separated for another year, keeping the Palm Springs and Orlando locations as planned for 2011, we look forward to the new combined show(s) in 2012 and eagerly await the updates.
From time to time we hear of industry people looking for a change in employment. If you have a marketing/sales/business development vacancy, we may be able to put you in contact with a suitable candidate. Contact David or Chris with details.
Best regards
The Alto Team
