It shouln’t be a toss up between exposure and generating leads
How often do you receive a promotional email or see a banner ad that interests you and, upon following the links, find yourself on a generic homepage or product page? With advances in the web enabling tracking, personalisation and data capture, calls to action in digital materials can and should be backed up by dedicated landing pages offering relevant incentives and information. Online promotions should no longer be limited to brand exposure. In fact, it is often quicker and more cost effective to use digital materials for lead generation and to measure return on investment. Hence, there is no reason to choose between leads and brand exposure, good email marketing and online advertising should achieve both objectives simultaneously. For more information on how you can strengthen your digital and online marketing impact contact your Alto Account Manager.

This month’s top read!
HeLa Who?
It is not often that you can get excited about a cell-line, but now is one of those occasions: Back in 1951, Henrietta Lacks, unbeknownst to her, donated some of her cervical cancers cells to science and they became the first immortalised research cell-line – HeLa – far outliving Henrietta herself.
Still the most widely used cell-line in research, HeLa cells have been involved in an amazing array of discoveries and advances: from the foundation of virology to breakthroughs essential for cancer prevention (HPV) and treatment (telomerase).
There is a darker side to the whole story though, a side excellently researched and delivered intertwined with the science, by Rebecca Skloot in her book: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. You can follow the author on Twitter @RebeccaSkloot and/or use the #HeLa hashtag.

Alto out and about
Nano4Life 2010
Dr Neil Ravenhill, Scientific Communications Manager, reports on Nano4Life.
As I entered the wonderful Gibbs Building on the Euston Road, I thought how proud Henry Wellcome would be of his legacy – one that drives £millions each year into breakthrough science. The reason for this visit was to attend the Wellcome Trust sponsored ‘Nano4Life’ conference, organised by the Nanotechnology KTN to promote the convergence of nanotechnology with the life science industry.
This excellent event punched above its weight, with fascinating presentations covering everything from the latest clinical and diagnostic nanotech apps, to the ground recently made by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) in providing clinical trials teams with direct access to the extensive ranks of NHS patients and facilities.
A key point raised by many of the presenters was that translational research is still a major bottle neck and that the recent move by pharma giants, such as GSK, towards ‘open innovation’ is much needed and very welcome in this respect.
ArabHealth 2010
For the second year running, Alto attended ArabHealth held in Dubai. Other than being nice and warm we have seen continued growth of this event with a 20% increase in attendance this year. Four more exhibition halls were added with the major increase in space taken by more and larger country pavilions. Research suggests there is sustained growth of public and private healthcare sectors in the Middle East with ArabHealth being the major event at which to conduct business and conclude business deals – making it the “Medica” of the Middle East.
From time to time we hear of industry people looking for a change in employment. If you have a marketing/sales/business development vacancy, we may be able to put you in contact with a suitable candidate. Contact David or Chris with details.
Best regards
The Alto Team
